Port of EMDEN...

{Location of where Charles Bronson and John Leyton escaped at the end of the The Great Escape film}

Hi Don,
Another filming location mystery solved!

I made contact with a history group at Emden and did send them the attached photo which I pasted from two movie clips. While they were not aware that filming of the Great Escape took place there they confirmed the photo shows without the slightest doubt the port of Emden.

They got pretty excited when they saw it and want to highlight it in their museum. The ALTA [home port is Stockholm] and other freight ships from the same shipping company were frequently unloading ore at Emden.

Regards
Stefan

The ALTA was built in 1957 for the Swedish Traffik AB shipping company. Ownership and names changed a few times later. In 1980 she ran aground in the Baltic Sea and was wrecked.
